Ordered Dithering

Experiment with different levels of dithering

Ordered dithering is, how I see it, the process by which an ordered pattern of colors is applied to an image to create the illusion of a higher color depth when colors are limited. This can often increase the quality of the image if it were otherwise undithered. If you're interested in learning more, I would recommend reading the Wikipedia article on ordered dithering.

To use this tool, just choose an image to upload, select a dithering level, and then hit submit. If the image is large, it may take a few seconds to process the entire image. You can choose between grayscale and color image dithering. Once the image is processed, you can preview it below, or click it to view it in fullscreen. If you want to save it, you can either right-click the image and "Save As" or hit the download button. If you made a mistake, you can reset the form, but you don't have to reset it if you just want to change some parameters.

I hope you find this tool useful. Ordered dithered images have a special quality, a certain aesthetic, that evokes nostalgia for the Internet of old. Thankfully we now have true 24-bit color, even alpha transparency, but it's nice to appreciate how far we've come.
